Our stained glass project proved to be the unforgettable experience we hoped it would. The Rice School was fortunate to have the expertise of a professional stained glass artist, Jane Baehre, who was instrumental in getting us through the project from beginning to end.

The vision was to generate a glass quilt comprised of one stained glass piece measuring 8" X 8" from each student. Students were encouraged to keep their designs simple, to limit their use of color, and to mostly keep in mind the medium they were working with. By understanding we were working with a material that was extremely brittle and unyielding, adjustments were constantly made to accommodate their skill level and the complexity of designs. Our students were exposed to and very intently engaged in the entire process stained glass; from actually cutting the glass to fitting the design, to grinding each glass piece, to copper foiling the pieces, and finally to fluxing and soldering their pieces together. Other than Ms. Baehre's invaluable assistance in completing this project, we all became best friends with our school nurse, Ms. Womack, who supplies us with box after box, after box of Band-Aids.

After everyone's individual piece was completed, it was amazing to see how Ms. Baehre attached each together to form the quilt we had envisioned. And to finally see it installed was staggering. This was an experience that won't be forgotten!
