What you will be learning about:
Sixth graders will have the opportunity to explore the diverse peoples and places of the world in a course titled World Cultures. Students will learn about cultures from all over the world while they acquire a better understanding of the geography and history of the world.
Class Rules:
1. Be Prepared – with class supplies, assignments, and a good attitude
2. Be Respectful – to yourself, to others, and to the learning process
3. Be Honest – about your work and your actions
4. Be Successful – you are always successful when you give your best effort!
Consequences for not following the class rules:
When a student occasionally does not meet classroom expectations they will receive a warning. If the behavior persists I may take further actions such as parent notification, a detention assignment, or a referral to the Assistant Principal. A student’s conduct score may be reduced if I take any of these actions.
Procedure for beginning class:
Students will complete the warm-up activity listed on the board as soon as they enter the classroom. After the warm-up is complete, students will copy the homework assignment in their planners and then clear their desks. I will check homework during this time. Instruction will begin as soon as all students have cleared their desks.
Tardiness:
A student will be counted as tardy if they are not in their seat when the bell rings. If a student is tardy, they must write their names on the tardy documentation sheet located near the door. Students must then immediately begin procedures for beginning class. Students will receive detention and a reduced conduct grade after the third tardy.
Locker and Restroom Policy:
Students have 5 minutes between class to use the restroom and get class materials from their lockers. Students will not be allowed to take time out of the class period to go to the restroom or their lockers. Students will only be allowed to leave the room in the case of an emergency.
Grading Procedure:
Daily assignments (class work, quizzes, and homework) - 50%
Major assignments (tests, projects, and the notebook evaluation) - 50%
ISN (Interactive Student Notebook)
Students will keep most of their work in an interactive notebook that they will create using a 3 subject spiral notebook. The pages of the ISN will be numbered and students will be instructed as to what page each assignment will go in. Even activities completed on worksheets will be glued into the ISN. Students will be responsible for bringing their ISN to class every class day. Students will be required to keep their ISN in order and will receive a major grade for a notebook evaluation at the end of each unit.
Homework Policy:
Students will be expected to complete a short homework assignment after each class day. No late homework assignments will be accepted!
Late work:
Any late major assignment will be penalized 10 points for each school day that it is late. No credit will be given for any assignments that are more than two weeks late. Daily assignments, not including homework, will receive 30 points off for the first day late and 50 points off for the second day they are late. Assignments will not be accepted after two days. Late homework will result in an automatic zero.
Make-up work:
It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete their make-up assignments after an absence. Students must find the Absent Book and copy the directions for the assignments they missed that day. The handouts for the assignments can be found in the bins next to the binder. All make-up work must be turned in no later than 1 week after the absence. Work turned in later than this will be subject to late scores.
Parent Notification of Student Progress:
Parents can stay informed of their child’s current grades in this class by looking at the grade log in the ISN. They can also check the progress of their child by looking through the ISN to see if all of the assignments are completed.
