Language Arts

We will now be studying the vocabulary and spelling words over a 2 week period.

Spelling: Review

FLoSS Rule- if a one-syllable base words ends in final /f/, /l/, or /s/ immediately a short vowel, the /f/ sound is spelled ff, the /l/ sound is spelled ll, and the /s/ sound is spelled ss. (class tiff hill)

The /k/ sound before a, o, y, or a consonant is spelled c. (cup)

The /k/ sound before e,i, or y is spelled k. (kite)

The medial /k/ sound before e after a short vowel is spelled ck. (ticket)

The /ng/ sound in medial or final position is spelled ng. (king)

The /ng/ sound before the /k/ sound or the /g/ sound is spelled n. (sink)

The /k/ sound in final posistion in a one-syllable base word after a short vowel is spelled ck. (truck)

The /k/ sound in final position after a consonant or a vowel pair is spelled k. (bank, book)

Vocabulary Wordstop

  • nestle- if you nestle something, you hold it against yourself softly.
  • weary- if you are weary, you are very tired.
  • elegant- something elegant is beautiful and fancy.
  • emerge- to emerge means to come out from behind or under something and into view.
  • nutritious- if a food is nutritious, it has things in it that will make your body healthy.
  • assemble- to assemble something means to put all of the different parts of it together.
  • contribute- if you contribute to something, like an event, you give or do something to help make it a success.
